When Natasha Bedingfield debuted in the states in 2005 with her hit CD, “Unwritten,” one of the featured songs was “Single,” a tune about the joys of being a free and unattached young woman.
Bedingfield is seeing things differently these days, having been happily married now for two years to California businessman Matt Robinson. In a recent phone interview, she told “Weekly Chatter” that finding a husband wasn’t a priority — but then she met Robinson.
“I was very surprised,” Bedingfield said. “I’d always enjoyed my single life. They say when you get married you learn how to be less selfish. You can do whatever you want when you’re single. And I definitely was at a point where I needed a companion. I needed someone to come home to because I was working so hard It’s made my life better.”

Rascal Flatts recently shot the video for their new single, “Easy,” a duet with British pop star, Natasha Bedingfield, in Nashville’s Schermmerhorn Symphony Hall. In the video, Gary LeVox and Natasha play a couple who have just broken up and meet again at a glamorous event.
“It’s like an awards show that we’re showing up at, and they’ve obviously just broken up,” Jay DeMarcus explains. “They’re both heartbroken, but they’re trying to put on their face to the world that it’s not bothering them. So, they glance at each other a couple of times across the room, and Joe Don and I are there for moral support, you know, to be there to pat him on the back and say ‘She’s not yours anymore, buddy.’”
“Easy” comes on the heels of the trio’s latest hit, “I Won’t Let Go.” The group is in agreement that Natasha’s voice made the track a standout. Joe Don Rooney is especially excited that ”Easy” is being released as a single.
“”Easy” is maybe my favorite track we’ve done in a long time, just primarily because it’s a duet and it’s got Natasha Bedingfield on it, and I think [to Gary LeVox] you guys sound amazing on it,” he said. “I remember recording it in Nashville and just really feeling good about the track when it went down, like, ‘Man, I think we really have something here.’ And you guys being in the studio together singing at the same time really brought that song to a whole other level for the album.”
“Natasha brought her voice to the table,” Gary said. “You know, we were such a huge fan of her vocals, and she’s an amazing, amazing singer. We really wanted to have a great singer on this thing and make it an event. And she came in, I mean her heart is just as big as her voice is, so she?s a great person as well. She was a big fan of ours with “Broken Road” and everything, and we’ve always been a fan of hers and thought she’d be great for it. And we called her up and she obliged and came in. We had a great time tracking it and recording it, and it came out wonderful.”

Natasha Bedingfield calls her current road trip “The Less Is More Tour.” At Monday’s Birchmere stop, the British singer/songwriter told the crowd that the title indicates her desire to present her tunes with “very simple” arrangements in smaller settings than she had in previous outings. Then again, Bedingfield’s singles in recent years haven’t charted as highly as her early releases, so commercial realities probably also served as inspiration for the downsized theme.
Plainly, with Brit-pop of the sort Bedingfield normally produces, less is not always more. She and her backing quartet proved as much during a brief mid-set “unplugged” foray, as she and her band sat on chairs and delivered a version of her 2007 single “Soulmate” that dulled the distinction between understated and bland. The show came back to life with “Try,” a power ballad during which Bedingfield, looking fit in an abs-baring tube top and puffy pants ensemble, got off her chair and hopped around while bellowing lines about the worthiness of weathering the tough times in a relationship.
The best moments of the show came when the singer totally ignored the tour’s credo and just got loud. “All I Need” opened with electronica and the Smiths-like tremolo, then morphed into a pop-disco extravaganza with strobe lights flashing and Bedingfield bouncing around the stage screaming, “Hey! Hey! Hey!” She kept things upbeat with a faithful version of the Police’s “Message in a Bottle” and covered Prince’s “Purple Rain” with even more bombast than its author infused.
Bedingfield ended the night where her career began — with “Unwritten,” the title tune and hit single off her 2004 debut CD. The song had most of the overwhelmingly female audience standing and, with arms raised up, crooning along all the motivational lyrics, which seem culled from a high school valedictory address: “Live your life with arms wide open/Today is where your book begins/The rest is still unwritten.” Bedingfield then left her fans wanting more, not less.

Natasha Bedingfield is an oasis in musical desert that sometimes feel clogged by major egos with minor talents.
Although Bedingfield is a major pop talent in the United Kingdom, and the first British female artist in 20 years to go the No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard pop chart with the title track of her 2005 debut album “Unwritten,” she’s not one to take a star turn. Instead, she’s living the theme of her tour “Less is More” in support of her newest album “Strip Me.”
“This is a very stripped down, stripped back tour, in contrast to a lot of pop music,” she said, from the U.K. just before starting the U.S. leg of tour. “This is not oversaturated and is really the best concerts I have ever done.”
Although Bedingfield is often thought of as a relatively new artist, she has a wealth of experience starting when she was a teen and formed a music group with her siblings. In her early career, she dabbled with everything from R&B to gospel and electronica.
Although some artists who’ve found international success feel compelled to stick with a particular format but that’s not the case with Bedingfield. Her musical wanderlust is still in full evidence.
“I am always writing,” she said. “My music is always about people and stories and … drawing inspiration from whatever is around me. I can see in the next five to 10 years I’ll probably do a folk country album and a dance project and other projects. I want to work with as many artists as possible. Music is a movement, especially nowadays, and there is so much talent out there. I want to bring it all together.”
She’s started already, recording the song “Easy” with the country supergroup Rascal Flatts and even made an appearance with them to perform the song at a Minnesota concert earlier this year.
“They are more country and I am really so amazed at how talented and real those musicians are,” she said. “I think country music values real music. …”
But don’t think Bedingfield is turning all her talents to that genre. Other artists she hopes to work with in the not-too-distant future include Kelly Clarkson, John Legend and Nicki Minaj.
If something gives me goose bumps I want to get involved,” she said. “Now that I have been in the industry awhile, I’ve made some really deep friends with other people and love the writing and music out there.”

The Black Eyed Peas “Concert 4 NYC” which will benefit the Robin Hood Foundation was cancelled Thursday night due to poor weather. The highly anticipated concert which was set to feature Taylor Swift, MC Hammer, Debbie Harry, LL Cool J, Natasha Bedingfield, Carole King and several other well-loved celebrities will be rescheduled in the near future. The 129,300 pounds of food that were collected as part of the benefit concert were donated as scheduled to “City Harvest,” which is a Robin Hood funded organization.
David Saltzman, Executive Director of Robin Hood: “While we are disappointed that last night’s concert was unable to proceed due to dangerous weather conditions, we’re so grateful to have a partner like City Harvest to illustrate the silver lining in last night’s storm clouds. The concert was to be a celebration of New Yorker’s coming together to help neighbors. This is a great example of just that. We’re pleased that so much good will come from last night’s unfortunate cancellation.”
The Black Eyed Peas as well as all of the scheduled performers and celebrity appearances were extremely disappointed in the cancellation but at the same time grateful for the generous donations received in conjunction with the event. Everyone is excited about making the “Concert 4 NYC” happen and look forward to the rescheduled date in order to continue to celebrate New Yorkers and raise money for a good cause.

● The Black Eyed Peas And Friends Benefit Concert
The Black Eyed Peas refused to let a little thunder and lightning stop their party in Central Park last night. What was meant to be a benefit show for 80,000 became an intimate backstage party for a mere 80 people due to inclement weater. “Chase and Robin Hood [foundation] will not let the rain and storm break our spirit…this is love,” the (sometimes forgetful) will.i.am tweeted last night.
