British pop star Natasha Bedingfield says she hasn’t always felt “Weightless.”
“I have never had a stick-thin model, size-zero body,” Bedingfield, 29, told PEOPLE at last week’s Dove Movement for Self-Esteem kickoff event. “I definitely battled a lot of insecurities as a young girl.”
Now, as a Grammy-nominated recording artist, Bedingfield admits, “The pressure on singers is 100-fold … but I decided not to starve myself to try and fit into the mold.”
The singer, who is scheduled to perform with Rascal Flatts at Nov. 9′s 45th Annual Country Music Awards, says the Dove ads featuring women of all sizes proudly showing off their bodies “helped me accept and love my curvy figure and see myself as womanly.”
Bedingfield, happily married to California businessman Matt Robinson since 2009, says there’s one area that does make her uncomfortable.
“To even talk about having kids makes me hot,” she says humorously. “I want to take off a layer of clothing.”
Fanning herself, she adds, “I already gave up a little freedom by getting married. I’m not really ready to give up that freedom yet.”

They’re country music veterans now but Rascal Flatts can still recall the panic that set in the first time they heard one of their songs on the radio.
“We were all together,” bassist Jay DeMarcus tells The Boot. “Our first single was ‘Praying for Daylight’ and we were actually coming back from a radio tour. It was one of those ‘Smash or Trash’ kind of things. It was scary. But I think two people liked it, so here we are!”
“We were tense for a minute there,” adds guitarist Joe Don Rooney.
“It was pretty cool that we were all together, though,” says singer Gary LeVox.
Natasha Bedingfield, who has experienced huge success at pop radio and joined the Flatts for the duet, ‘Easy,’ admits her first experience with radio was a little unsettling, too.
“I was shocked the first time I heard myself on the radio,” says the singer. “I think I was walking into a shop and suddenly I felt like I had to duck, because I felt like I was back in my music video that I just did. It felt great, but it did feel weird.”
Rascal Flatts and Natasha Bedingfield will join forces onstage next month, to perform ‘Easy’ during the CMA Awards telecast, Nov. 9 at 8:00 PM (ET) on ABC.

Natasha Bedingfield, perhaps best known for “Unwritten,” her catchy theme song for MTV’s reality hit, “The Hills,” has left her pop roots and gone country–at least for her debut on the 45th annual Country Music Awards.
“It’s such a small world and there’s so much music out there,” the blonde Brit told “Fox & Friends” this morning. “It’s so much fun to dabble in a different style.”
Grammy-award nominated Bedingfield finds inspiration for her songs from the heart. “I just sing about life,” she explains. “I think that love happens to be one of those subjects that is dear to people’s hearts. I love how country music is about real things.”

Bedingfield is also getting real about the issue of body image, and has joined Dove in their self-esteem initiative for girls this weekend. “I’m kicking off the weekend, but the whole point of it is to just to encourage women all across America to spend an hour with a young woman in their life,” Bedingfield explains. “I’ve always loved the way that Dove advertises their products, because it’s about real women. I do feel like every woman feels like their self-esteem is challenged by the images that we have or the perfect images we’re trying to live up to.”
For those who aren’t sure how to talk to girls about self-esteem, Bedingfield has a suggestion. “If you go on Dove’s Facebook, it’s got an amazing toolkit that can help you figure out how to help with that stuff.”
“I’m pro the body,” declares Bedingfield. “It takes a lot of work to be comfortable in your own body, so anything that helps!”
