The Grammy nominated singer, famous for her debut album Unwritten, will perform at the event in Southampton on June 13 where the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton will officially name the 3,600-passenger new-generation ship.

Paul Ludlow, Princess Cruises UK director, said: “We are delighted that Natasha will be joining us at the naming celebrations. Her music will add a contemporary twist to the traditional elements of the ceremony along with a few other surprises.”

The inaugural ceremony will include a blessing of the vessel and a performance by The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Portsmouth and the pipers of the Irish Guards.

In keeping with traditions, the ship’s godmother, The Duchess of Cambridge, will then break the champagne bottle on the bow of the ship.

The event will be the highlight of the week-long inaugural celebrations to welcome the ship into service.

Royal Princess will arrive in Southampton on June 7 and then depart on her maiden voyage to Barcelona on June 16.

Special features on board include an over-water SeaWalk with a top-deck glass-bottomed walkway extending 28 feet beyond the edge of the ship.

When X Factor NZ judge Daniel Bedingfield needed assistance to help him coach a bunch of under-25-year-old female singers, and try to choose his top three, he didn’t have to look far – just as his pop star sister Natasha had followed him into the music business, she’s now helping her big brother as a guest mentor.

Natasha began performing at the age of 14, was signed at 22, and released her first album, Unwritten at 23, so Natasha is well-versed in what it’s like to be a young female in the music industry. That Unwritten sold 2.3 million albums worldwide and earned her Grammy and Brit Award nominations indicates she also knows a thing or two about delivering a song with conviction and charisma.

Then there’s the fact that, like Daniel, she has a soft spot for New Zealand – their parents are Kiwis and many of their relatives live here.

“We come down as often as we can. Our grandparents and uncles and aunties and cousins are all there, and I’ve always felt a sense of belonging in New Zealand, so it means a lot to me to be involved,” she explains down the line from Los Angeles, where she’s finishing off her fourth album.

Of course that she got to go to Rarotonga for three days and spend some time with Daniel was also very appealing.

“Oh it was really fun in Rarotonga. I got to go in an outrigger and enjoy the sunshine.

“And working with Daniel was great because it was just talking. It actually felt very natural to come and help him make those decisions, so it was really nice.”

Daniel clearly loved having her on board, too. “There is no one I trust more. Her opinions are golden and we were in sync with our decisions the whole time.”

Natasha says she found the attitudes of the contestants inspiring.

“It was great seeing the hunger and the passion in the contestants, and that was something I could very much relate to in terms of how I felt when I first started in the music industry. It was good to be reminded of that. But I was also hoping to encourage them to see music as something they can express themselves through, and to say something they want to say, not just to try to impress people or please people.”

Though there were no arguments between the Bedingfields during the retreat, Natasha happily admits there were some “intense discussions” with Daniel when it came time to deciding which three of his six would make it through to the top 12.

“It was really close, so many hard decisions. I was actually very surprised at how much talent there was. I think you get a bit of a view into what record companies go through when they’re choosing whether to sign an artist or not, because it’s not just about whether you like the person, you have to think, ‘are the public going to like this person as well?’ You hope they’ll be the same.”

Without giving away who got through, Natasha did have a couple of personal favourites.

“There was one girl I thought was absolutely world-class, and her name is Cassie Henderson. She just seemed to have the whole package and was able to bring the songs alive in a powerful way.

Song choice is always an important issue for contestants on the show, and Natasha was happy to offer some advice in that area.

“I like it when girls sing guys’ songs. Or when guys sing girls’ song. Basically, when you take a song and do it in a completely different way. And sometimes I do that in my shows, like I sing Purple Rain, and I love being able to put my own twist on it. Another song I love to sing is The Scientist by Coldplay. It can be a big mistake to choose a song that’s, well, for example, maybe a girl choosing to sing a Whitney Houston song, because no one can sing it like she does.”

Viewers, unfortunately, won’t get to see Natasha sing during the show (“unless they bring me back in!”) but if she were to get up in front of this judging panel, TimeOut thought she may have a good shot by singing Elton John’s Daniel – his 1973 hit about missing an older brother. “Oh, I don’t know it,” she laughs.

“I need to check that out! I love Elton John, he and David [Furnish, his husband] are good friends of mine, but I haven’t heard that one, I don’t know why. I love his music.”

Natasha Bedingfield admits it’s “weird” to find herself judging instead of being judged.

The British pop star was last night unveiled as one of four guest mentors joining the judging panel on talent show The X Factor.

She joins her older brother Daniel as the contestants head to retreats where they will be culled to a final dozen acts. The Bedingfield siblings will be coaching the girls’ under-25 category, Stan Walker will be working with the over-25s, Mel Blatt has the groups, and Ruby Frost the under-25 boys.

Having had several UK top 10 songs and currently recording her fourth album in Los Angeles, Natasha, 31, will have plenty of advice for the girls – though she admits finding it hard to choose between them.

“I definitely didn’t envy Daniel and the decisions he was going to have to make,” she said.

“It was a bit weird to go to work somewhere and not be the one singing, but it was a lot of fun to be on the other side of it …”

She doesn’t perform in the upcoming episodes, though she does admit to a bit of humming along.

“There were some moments when the girls were singing, and Daniel and I couldn’t help ourselves, we’d start humming.

“We had to really refrain from joining in.”

Natasha wasn’t born in New Zealand, as Daniel, 33, was but she has many relatives living here, and she loves to visit as often as she can.

“I’ve always felt a sense of belonging in New Zealand.”

The Bedingfields and the competitors head to Rarotonga for their retreats in this weekend’s show.

And ahead of her highly anticipated performance at the Australian Hair Fashion Awards, Natasha Bedingfield was seen eating ice cream with her husband as she took a wander around the city.

The 31-year old was wearing the same low cut top as when she landed at the airport when she was spotted enjoying the sweet treat, which was likely to be pistachio flavoured due to its green hue.

Tenna takes the stage to perform Natasha Bedingfield’s “Soulmate” and the crowd seems to love her. Nicki thinks that Tenna has a voice that’s reminiscent of some of the great 90s R&B artists, but that she needs to change up her look. Mariah says Tenna gave a beautiful performance, while Randy affirms that “This is how you do it!”

Working on a song can be a long, time-consuming process, which “Between the Raindrops” was. Talking about the writing and rewriting process, lead singer Jason Wade explained that after three and a half months of creating it they decided a female voice would be a perfect fit for the song. Knowing Natasha for over six years and admiring her work, they reached out to her and she was in the studio the next week.

“I think when anything happens and it’s an artistic connection it happens organically and it’s not put together,” Jason explained. “When she came into the studio she sang the song three or four times and the hair on your arm would stand up. It was beautiful and that’s really when the song came to fruition.”

An Evening with Women is one of the premiere LGBT events in Los Angeles, shining a spotlight on lesbians and bisexual women and their allies. Proceeds from the evening support the Center’s vital life-saving services and enrichment programs for women and girls.

With the help of co-chairs Annie Goto, Kelly Lynch, Shannon Del and Brent Bolthouse, last year’s benefit raised more than $450,000 for the Center, which provides food and shelter for homeless youth, services for seniors, legal assistance, domestic violence services, health and mental health services and cultural arts programs.

‘It is so important to me to lend support to local organizations that positively impact the lives within their community,‘ Bedingfield says. ‘This event is going to be spectacular. Linda Perry is an incredible person as well as a musical genius, and I am so honoured she asked to be involved. My friend Sia is one of the best performers ever. I’m so excited for us all to get in the same room together surrounded by a crowd of wonderful and inspiring people.’

Kathy Griffin added: ‘I’m so honored to be hosting this year’s An Evening with Women. It’s a fantastic cause for the LGBT community and it’s so rare Ozzy Osbourne and I get to have our lesbian time together, so that will be nice.”

The night begins at 6 p.m. with cocktails and mingling, followed by dinner in the International Ballroom. The show is set to begin at 8 p.m. with a live auction and performances.
